best test team of all time!

so sehwag is a better bat then barry richards  you learn something every day. looks like this is very biased toward certain countries. hadlee and botham would be players i'd rather have in my team than kapil dev. might have gone in with a second spinner given how good the likes of murali has been :hmmm: curtley amborose to make way for the spinner for me. was he really the best of all the great windies quicks? mcgrath rather than lillee

edit for team list

Virender Sehwag, Sunil Gavaskar, Donald Bradman, Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Kapil Dev, Adam Gilchrist (wk), Shane Warne, Wasim Akram, Curtly Ambrose, Glenn McGrath.

actually another thought if you just want to make one change, why isnt sobers in rather than kapil dev?

it seems the picks are certain countries from certain eras.

McGrath / Ambrose / Wasim / Kapil - not in my team

Sobers for Dev, probably big Joel, Lillee, Roberts or a second spinner

Barry Richards would have batted over Sehwag - no Viv

My first bowler would be Malcolm Marshall.

Different class he was, better than Garner and Ambrose.

Have I ever mention when Marshall once bowled to me. 8-)

Then Viv Richards picked up a ball and thought he bowl one to me.
I thought "This is going for 6"......Fooker only bowled me,

Marshall as superb - always supported Hampshire and watched him play hundreds of times - great fella as well.

I would pitch in Greenidge as well as an opener - if you wanted to go for a swashbuckler 11

Sehwag & Dev :WTF: :WTF: :WTF:

No Viv or Barry Richards? :WTF: :WTF: :WTF:

No Michael Holding, Lillee or Hadlee? :WTF: :WTF: :WTF:

No Botham? :WTF: :WTF: :WTF:

The Aussie test team of 5 years ago or the Windies from around 75-80 would have beaten that lot

i'd accept marshall for garner no worries.

amazing how good they were, after years with the likes of vanburn holder (lovely man but not a world beater) along comes andy roberts (the original you could argue was the best). then holding marshal and garner (cant recall the precise order) followed by ambrose and walsh. not too sure of the right pecking order of that lot but you have to admire roberts as the trailblazer, maybe he really was the best, i keep changing my mind.

i think lillee was ahead of thommo and mcgrath, although thommo was awesome at his best.

don't think wasim or waqar were quite as good as these.

these days zaheer is probably as good as any current quick i guess.

leaving viv out seems odd but dont forget you are meant to be thinkng of the best test side!

i feel another thread coming on.............

best test team of all time!

Postby 12345678 » Tue Jul 19, 2011 9:07 am

think i will stick with my 2nd draft even after seeing the stats!

admittedly a blind faith in barry richards being able to transfer his amazing first class form to the test arena, was robbed of seeing him have a prolonged test career by apartheid. interesting to see marshall garner and ambrose right next to each other in the averages list.

we have kind of overlooked the unspectacular kallis and hadlee wouldnt be far away along with imran khan.

i'm sticking with barry richards, sunny gavasker, don bradman, sachin tendulkar, brian lara, sir garfield sobers, adam gilchrist, shane warne, dennis lillee, muttiah muralitharan, joel garner.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/cricke ... ility.html

boycs team above compared to the comparative icc pick below

Geoffrey Boycott's Dream XI
ICC Dream XI

Jack Hobbs
Virender Sehwag

Len Hutton
Sunil Gavaskar

Donald Bradman
Donald Bradman

George Headley
Sachin Tendulkar

Viv Richards
Brian Lara

Garry Sobers
Kapil Dev

Alan Knott
Adam Gilchrist

Sydney Barnes
Shane Warne

Malcolm Marshall
Wasim Akram

Shane Warne
Curtly Ambrose

Dennis Lillee
Glen McGrath

clearly sir geoff would have picked himself and had to replace himself with another yorkshire sir

only 1x yorkies in his world XI, is this a sign he fell out with fred trueman?

interesting to see his windies quick pick is marshall.

glad to see he has backed me up with lillee over mcgrath.

his only 'obvious' silly that i can see is knott over gilchrist .

so to be fair to the cantankerous old git (who played the best innings i have personally ever seen at the ground) he has probably done a better job than the icc :agree1:

andy

ps sir geoff soon kicked those indians out didn't he
